Because search engines can’t watch and understand videos (at least, not yet), it’s important to learn how to optimize YouTube videos for SEO. With a clear video optimization strategy, the algorithms that find and rank videos will better identify your content as relevant. To that end, I’m going to talk about three things you can do to optimize YouTube videos for SEO.
Research, Research, Research
One of Funnelbox’s core values is to “envision the goal before you roll.” Before your video goes live, start with the end goal in mind. If you want your content to rank, you have to understand what other content is out there. Yes, that’s right. It’s not enough to create a great video. You have to know who else is creating similar things.
Competitor videos can’t hide their keywords. Whether you’re using a program like TubeBuddy or digging into the source code, it’s important to see how successful videos position their content.
By doing your research, you’ll be able to see what titles, keywords and descriptions look like and how you might want to position yourself.
Research some more
It’s important to look at your existing video content (if you have it) and see how it has (or hasn’t) performed. If similar videos have viewers dropping at a certain average percentage viewed, make sure your call to action comes before that point. I mean, if someone is going to bounce, at least give them something constructive to do that keeps them within your content.
Look at how your current videos are ranking for certain keywords. This is a great time to also reassess those keywords. How are they ranking? There are several freemium options to quickly find the data you need to evaluate.
Why this matters
By making sure your content has good titles, descriptions and keywords, the probability that your videos will appear in the suggested video view (either on the right-hand rail or at the end if a viewer doesn’t have autoplay on) increases.
When you know how people are finding your content, you can create future content or review existing content to better speak to your audience.
