In the past, I have talked about how YouTube helps deliver profitable results. One way to do that with video is using TrueView ads.


TrueView ads are video advertisements broadcast through YouTube, other partner video sites and mobile apps. There are two types: in-stream video ads and in-display video ads.


IN-STREAM TrueView ads are the ads that play before, during or after a video on YouTube, partner video sites and mobile apps. They last from 12 seconds to three minutes. However, a STUDY conducted by Microsoft has shown that the average human attention span is a mere eight seconds (yes, it’s less than that of a goldfish). Don’t try to use all three minutes, unless you have really engaging content that people watch and say, “Oh, that was three minutes already???” When the viewer can skip after five seconds, it’s important to front-load your message. Get your name, product and service in front of the viewer right away (unless you’re going for the suspense route, then make them curious). Luckily, as an advertiser, you only pay when the viewer watches more than 30 seconds of the video or clicks on the ad. Even if the viewer chooses to skip the full ad, you can get some top-of-mind awareness or increase your brand consideration.

IN-DISPLAY TrueView ads are placed on the right, next to the video being played. They are at the top of the playlists and other recommended videos. Viewers will see the thumbnail along with three lines of text. This format gives the viewer the choice to watch your ads. The ad video thumbnails can also appear under the search results, promoted videos, video suggestions and related videos. You will are only charged when the viewer chooses to watch the video by clicking on it. Because the viewer chooses to engage with your ad, you don’t have to worry as much about how long your ad runs. Keep your TrueView ad as short as possible. Doing so can encourage your viewers to click on your call to action.
